To The Vicar of St. Giles Church,
Sidbury,
Devon.
20th November 1996.
Dear Reverend,
First I must apologise for not knowing your name.
I have spent the last 16 years tracing my family tree and have gone back to 1040. My wife and I have just spent an enjoyable few days at Sidmouth. One of my interests and reasons for visiting was to look at my family history in this area. In the 1400’s my family owned Sand House Manor & Sidbury Manor. I had obtained a booklet on Sand House Manor and was surprised to find the family detail was entered incorrectly signing it to another family. I contacted Mr P. Huyshe the author and present owner and called to see him. After speaking with him he has agreed with me and admitted his mistake. He jested he could understand being corrected on his recent history the last 200 years or so, but did not expect to be contested on the 1400 period!!
On visiting St. Giles we purchased the booklet "A History of Sidbury" by G.A. Medley, in this I found the same mistake & further mistakes. On page 16 it mentions Roger Tremayle who married Margaret one of the daughters of John Farway. This statement is totally wrong! Margaret was the daughter of Sir John Trivett of Woolmersdon Manor Bridgwater. Sir John Trivett’s wife was Joan Farway daughter of John Farway.
See page 18. As is the same with her sister Joan Trivett written incorrectly down as Joan Farway. Joan Trivett married Roger Pym about 1410 and lived at Sidbury Manor. Hence the lands of Pym or Pymm not Pynn.
I have enclosed my family tree to show it properly. The official record of what I have stated is at Exeter Record Office.
I do hope you don’t mind my bothering you with this. I would very much appreciate you handing the correct information to the persons involved with the history of Sidbury so that the incorrect detail can be corrected.
It was pleasing to see our shield still on the ceiling supports in St Giles.
We hope to call down again next year, perhaps we may be able to meet you.
Yours sincerely,
John E. Trivett. "Sandringham", Walford Road, Ashfield, Ross-on-Wye,
